Study of Hens by Axel Johansen
Digital Print. One of a series of images interpreting the Life of St Gwynllyw, a sixth century saint local to Newport, Gwent.

Digital print using archival quality inks on Satin Photo paper
Image size 374 mm x 278 mm

Gwynllyw, formerly king of Gwent, followed his monastic calling to establish a retreat with his wife Gwladys at or near the site of St Woolos Cathedral, Newport. The oldest parts of the cathedral, such as the arches of the nave, are roughly contemporary with the story of St Gwynllyw which is told in a twelfth century manuscript held in the British Library. Encouraged by their son, Cadog, the couple separate and Gwynllyw establishes his monastery in the hills, while Gwladys settles on the Ebbw River.
